Collotype once was the world's mass-printing technology. Today, it only remains in Kyoto, where the company Benrido produces copies of ancient scrolls, drawings, and letters – some of which are centuries old.
Until my visit, Benrido didn't know that they were the last collotype printers in the world. Two years earlier, I had done a story on the last studio in Europe and thus learned of their closure.
