During World War II, Japan produced around 9,000 tons of chemical weapons on the island of Okunoshima. Today, around 700 free-roaming rabbits distract from that history. The nation denies using poison gas in the war, but the traces remain in China and Japan today.
I began researching the island's history and this war crime in 2013, and I don't think I am completely finished yet – although I now have more material than almost anyone else. This 30-minute film is a first result of my research. It had its world premiere at the Hiroshima International Film Festival in 2019.
